November 27, 2018, Vancouver, BC – Vancouver-based Optigo Networks, the network connectivity, monitoring, and analytics company, has released a whitepaper on the future of BACnet and the Building Internet of Things (BIoT). This whitepaper probes the biggest questions we face in BACnet, the building automation communications protocol, and our smart buildings today. Interviewees discussed data privacy and ownership, debated whether BACnet will always remain with American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), and questioned if BACnet will be replaced entirely by the Internet of Things.

Reports consistently show BACnet adoption increasing year over year. As IoT changes the ways we design, manage, and analyze our buildings, there are new conversations we need to be having around building automation. Concerns about BACnet’s cybersecurity in this age of digital warfare, generating a great deal of data on fragile networks, and how BACnet will be managed — and by whom — are particularly pressing issues.
